Let me be honest for a second; working out sucks. For those rare and strange creatures who enjoy it and look forward to it, I admire and commend you. I am not one of those majestic creatures.
But I have to work out. My VSG surgery was not a fix all, and I prepared myself with that knowledge prior to making the decision to have the surgery. My sleeve is a tool in helping me accomplish a healthier life.
I have always been an active person. In my teenage years I played softball, volleyball, and I was a competitive cheerleader for six years. I rarely sit down and veg out in front of the tv. I have never let my weight stop me from being an active person.
However, I still have never truly been thrilled to work out. Maybe some day I will look forward to it, for now that’s not happening. But I do it. I do it for the bigger picture and the grand goal.
I have attempted working out at the gym after work, I’ve walked on my lunch breaks at work, I’ve tried to work out right before bed. None of that worked for me. So now, 4-5 days a week I force myself out of bed at four a.m. and I work out at home for about an hour.
I switch things up and some days are dance DVDs, others I lift weights and do squats, and some days I use a machine I have. Every weekday though I get it done. And when the weather is nice enough I plan to walk some mornings around town and jump on my trampoline as much as possible.
My point isn’t just to tell you what works for me; it’s to reinforce that these are ALL individual and personal choices! No one can force you to eat right and get your ass moving in the morning to work out. No one can make the decision to have surgery to help you on this journey. These are all choices you have to make and be determined to remain consistent.
Since I’ve started working out in the mornings I feel so much difference. I start my day this way and I don’t dread having to drag myself to a gym after work. I don’t spend the day thinking of a million and one reasons why I don’t want to go or the hundred of other things I could be doing instead of going to the gym. This is what works for me.
So find what works for you. Join a gym if you’d like. Workout on your lunch break if that’s more convenient for you. Go for a walk outside just as the sun is setting if that keeps you motivated. Or wake up at 4am and get shit done if you so choose.
Every decision you make is yours and yours alone. Do this for yourself and I can promise:: you will never regret it.
